ROWE RACING concludes 2016 Nordschleife season with a strong second-place finish
Alexander Sims and Stef Dusseldorp record best Nürburgring result/ Success tally in the Eifel in the BMW M6 GT3’s maiden season: two podiums and two fifth place finishes
ROWE RACING said good-bye to the Nürburgring-Nordschleife for the 2016 season with a great second-place finish on Saturday. At the “DMV 250-Meilen-Rennen”, round nine of the VLN Endurance Championship, the team from St. Ingbert missed victory by just 33.552 seconds after four hours of racing and 28 laps with typical Nürburgring weather conditions, including fog and rain. Following P3 in the Nürburgring 24h qualifying race and P5 in both the 24h race and the seventh VLN round, this second place was the best result for ROWE Racing with the BMW M6 GT3 in its maiden season in the “Green Hell”.
The race started a few minutes late due to the bad weather conditions. Only two laps into the race, BMW works driver Alexander Sims from Great Britain took the lead after he starting from P7 on the grid – thanks to a perfectly timed pit stop and a strong performance at the wheel.
As a consequence of being on a different pit stop strategy to the competition and following a yellow, the team later dropped back to second. This position was successfully defended by Dutchman Stef Dusseldorp, who took over the wheel from Sims, despite more rain in the final phase of the race. Ultimately Dusseldorp had opened a gap of more than eight seconds to the third-placed car, securing the SP9 class victory.
Alexander Sims (ROWE RACING BMW M6 GT3 #23): “It was a pretty cool race, with a lot happening. We had wet conditions at the start, then it dried out, but Stef was running in the wet again towards the end on slick tyres, which is pretty difficult at the Nordschleife. The ROWE RACING team did a good job to get the strategy right. One other car had a little bit more pace than us, but in class the BMW was working very well. Everyone did a great job and I am very pleased to be on the podium.”
Stef Dusseldorp (ROWE RACING BMW M6 GT3 #23): “Towards the end it was really difficult out there. We had a bit of rain, but also some dry sections of the track. It was difficult to see the wet patches. Now we are very happy to be on the podium in P2.”
ROWE RACING Team Principal Hans-Peter Naundorf: “This was a really nice conclusion to our racing season here at the Nordschleife – a track where we feel completely at home. I’m happy for the whole team that delivered a flawless performance throughout the whole year, always getting the maximum. Alex drove a great race at the start, then Stef defended our podium position – a fantastic performance from both our drivers. Now we will have a little party tonight.”
To round off a busy 2016 season, ROWE RACING will contest a true highlight from 17th to 20th November: the FIA GT World Cup at the renowned Macau street circuit. Dutchman Nick Catsburg will be at the wheel of the BMW M6 GT3 when ROWE RACING celebrates its Macau debut.
